It's good to hear that communication channels with the RSPCA and councils are opening up more on this matter.

When the QLD floods hit, I was working for a government department that was assisting with SES calls (and later, all the other assistance and donation calls).

I spoke to so many people that hearts were breaking over the phone. So many told me about their family pet. Many already knew their pet had been taken away by flood waters. Then others were calling from temporary emergency centres where they weren't allowed to bring in pets (only some places had this restriction and with demand, some changed the rules to let pets in).

It's a crap situation for everyone. And a real kick in the teeth when you meet people that go 'What a moron. Trying to save their dog.' Even people that may not value the lives of any sentient being that isn't human,  I still can't get my head around how they can't see why a family pet is important to its human owner - that they are one of the family too. /rant
