i know there are other threads on the best tasting vegan cheese and what not, but most of the products suggested seem to be bought online. does anyone know of any decent tasting ones that you can pick up at the supermarket or just a health food store or something?
All depends where you live. I found "Cheesly" nacho and blue cheese flavour and "Toffutti" slices at my local Foodworks in SA recently and "Toffutti" spread in Safeway (Woolworths) and coles. You have to suss out the Veggie/Vegan section in each store to find out... Assuming they even have one at all.
The nicest tasting one that I have managed to find in Coles and Foodland is Tofutti 'better than cream cheese' (yum, it's so good). The Tofutti slices were available too, but are not to dissimilar to plastic. As for Cheezly, I was very excited to find it at a local Foodland, but then tasted it...
I think healthfood stores may be your best bet if you want to find anything more than Tofutti cream cheese,
ive only seen the tofutti cream cheese at coles and a soy cheese (not vegan as contains tiny bit of milk product)
We have an organic grocer 'city organics' who sell all the vegan cheeses as well as organic products. worth keeping an eye out for places like this! ...... look out for ORGANIC, GLUTEN FREE, etc . They usually throw in vegan items too
I went into one of the local woolworths today to buy Tofutti's better than cream cheese to find they have discontinued it.
The customer service girl annoyed me too as she looked at me like some kind of weirdo when I asked her if they had any...
The only non-dairyCheese sub they have there now is the Tofutti American style slices.
So pissed off.
I sent them a assertive email about my thoughts on the fact that they have such a large array of meat and a dairy and a piddly amount of vegan substitutes.
I guess they think stocking "lactose free" dairy product solves the problem.
quite sad really.
