Im sad one of my friends is going to iraq this week to fight in the war. Im scared hes going to die and since i dont have many friends i rely dont want to loose another one.
Damn. What country is he from?

I know how you feel though. One of my friends went to to Iraq as part of an RAR. It's very, very scary for friends and family. Being with an RAR, though he was was going to come against the worst in terms of the enemy, he was also going to be surrounded with some of the best of the best -- which was comforting for all of us left in Australia.
Hes from america and is going to the most bombed base in Iraq.

I haven't met him I.R.L though he was going to marry my cousin so i have talked to him on the phone heaps and through facebook.

I rely dont want another person that i know to die.
Well at least, for your friends sake, he is being deployed after the massive counter-insurgency surge by US troops which secured at least the urban areas in Iraq. It's pretty amazing to think that the city and its surrounding areas are now controlled by the Iraqis, mostly free from terrorism.

From what you're saying, I'm guessing your friend is going there in a combat role? If so, he's going to one of the non-urban areas of Iraq. From what my friend told me (returned now), if you're in a rural area in Iraq, you're involved in mostly counter-terrorism, not counter-insurgency. For your friend, that means the missions he untertakes while deployed are going to be fairly controlled -- it won't be all out war; instead, small covert teams taking out targets. I'm sure he's told you all this, but at least he won't be at risk of the f**king IEDs like the troops are in Afghanistan her are performing the much blooder counter-insurgency missions.

I hope this information -- which I'm sure you're friend has told you twice over -- has helped. I know this sort of information from him, and other veterans, helped me.

Anyway, at least he isn't in Afghanistan. That really is one dangerous hell-hole.

All the best mate.
