a second chance at life

I've always wanted to save some ex-battery hens, but I've never known where to start. When it came to enquiring at chicken farms, the farmers were very hard to deal with and reluctant to offer up any information.

My partner contacted Animals Australia who put us in touch with Monique LeRoy. Monique is a beautiful soul who collects battery hens from a willing farmer and finds loving homes for them, which she calls the Battery Hen Adoption Project.

As my Christmas present this year, my Partner got me seven gorgeous ex-battery hens from Monique. We picked them up on Christmas eve from Monique’s home in Brisbane, QLD. Monique had rescued them that same day from the battery farm, and for the first time in their lives, the hens saw the sun. They didn’t know how to walk or lie down, as they’d never been able to do this before in their cramped cages, but they will soon adapt to their new lives. The lives they should have had from the beginning.

The chickens have very little feathers as they have nothing to do in the battery farms but peck at each other, and their beaks are chopped short by the farmer, but they already look so much healthier and happier.

They are still getting used to life in the real world, but they are learning very fast. They’ve been enjoying lying in the sun, dust baths, pecking for bugs and they’re much steadier on their feet now.

If you’ve ever thought you’d like to rescue some battery hens, give Monique a call:

I love my chickens, they fill my heart with joy every day and I'm glad I can give them a happy life.

Haha,  this story put a smile on my face. Good job, man. I'm sure this world is very unusual to them, but they most definately prefer it to the cages!

I'd want to do the same If I had a place of my own.

How beautiful! One of my favourite things is seeing animal get to walk on grass in the sun for the first time and you can literally see the joy in them as they realise they're free, and go from nervous and tentative to kicking their legs up and running around. Beautiful happy

That story was awesome! Reminds me of one of my favourite quotes from the Matrix:

Neo: Why do my eyes hurt?

Morpheous: Because you've never used them before.

As an aside, we really need to find out if other states have similar angels like Monique.

When my partner phoned Animals Australia, they said there were people who find homes for ex-battery hens in other states too. I'm sure there are people all over the country who would do it, many of which Animals Australia may know of.

Monique said she sends her chickens as far as Northern NSW when the need arises. I drove 2 and a half hours to Brisbane to pick them up, but the chickens didn't seem to mind the drive and it was definitely worth it  happy

That's so lovely! I'm from Geelong in Vic, and every 6 months we rescue 30 or so ex-hens (before they get sent to be turned into dog-food!) from a local battery.

It's such a rewarding feeling - I get emotional every time we bring new girls home - seeing them dust bathe for the first time ever is an amazing experience. Good on you, those 7 girls are very lucky happy

My mother purchased 2 chickens and a coop from a friend of hers that was moving interstate, she picked them up today. They are so adorable! We met Monique at the World Vegan Day fair in Brisbane and will definitely be calling her in the next couple of days so we can get our little chicken family growing happy happy can't wait!
