I'm learning the violin and want to know if there is any alternatives for violins that are not put together with animal hide glue. I've read somewhere you can use linseed oil as the alternative to crushed beetle varnish and other materials for the replacement of horse hair. Is there a website where I can order it from?
As far as I'm aware, it's very difficult to get a true vegan violin. You could attempt to get one custom made but it would be pricey and the few sources I've seen state that the alternatives are no where near as durable (whether that is in regards if you're a professional with regular gigs or a student with a class a week, who knows). If that is true, is getting a violin that has a high probability of rapid wear and tear worth it if you factor in not only the cost to you but the waste of materials from buying a new product more frequently? Though, it at least it isn't mass produced so very limited to violate human rights and obviously non-human...
If you can't get a total cruelty-free one, an alternative could be getting a second-hand one. It doesn't hide the fact of what it's made of, but at least another animal didn't have to go through anything.
How old are you? I'm only asking as my sister started playing violin at age 8 and by the time she was 14 she had gone through 4 violins due to growing. Perhaps you can get second hand ones until you have stopped growing and then look into a veg*n one?
