I've just done a round of emailing many, many high end hair product companies asking which ones are vegan or cruelty-free. I had 3 replies:
KEUNE is vegan & cruelty-free. Here is their reply to my question dated 2 May 2012:
* I am pleased to inform you all KEUNE products are suitable for vegans as the ingredients are either plant derived or synthetic. As a company, we pride ourselves in upholding good ethical & moral standards, as well as ensuring that the products we develop are high-quality & safe. I am also pleased to inform you that Keune ensures that none of its products are tested on animals as we are concerned with the welfare of animals.
Hype (a new hair care range -
www.hype4hair.com.au) has been launched. My hairdresser spoke to their rep & they told me they're vegan, use only plant proteins & they're also using brail on their bottles to help the people with vision impairements too!!!!!
Tigi (owned by Unilever) - does animal testing as a last resort. They do it if required, but also try to encourage that country to change it's laws so they don't have to animal test in the future. (I have their policy written in 2008 which I was emailed today 3 May 2012).
I'm super thrilled to learn this as a hair/make-up junkie. Ever since going vegan I worried I wouldn't find high-end cosmetics, skincare or hair care anymore. Seems the market is positively changing it's views on veg*ism
Personally I'm giving Hype & Keune a whirl - shampoo, conditioner & straightening balm. I used to luv Tigi (before I was vegan), however, until they're vegan I won't be using again (and they may never be vegan).
