I have not found a place so far that doesn't just use vegetable oil to cook their chips (separately too). I still always make sure to check when going to a new place though!

With the cases of coeliac disease etc, chip shops are mad not to cook potatoes in separate batches of oil.

The batter also falls off the fish when it's flung in the oil, which the shops don't want all over the chips.

Last I checked Red Rooster chips still have beef tallow in them (the oil itself is vegetable based, but the processing of the chips involves tallow)

Do you think it is okay to get chips from a fish and chip shop where the same oil is used to fry fish and that?
As it's not contributing in any way to harming animals, it is completely up to you and what you feel comfortable with. It is not unethical for you to consume chips this way.

Most of the big chains like that do use beef tallow in their chips. I don't think anyone is disputing that. I think this is only about chips from your local corner shop. Not places like Red Rooster, KFC and McDonalds. I don't think any one of us would want to support a place like that whether they use beef tallow in their chips or not.

Just thought I'd mention it, as I used to eat them when I was vegetarian and not as strict about where I got my food!  I was so disappointed when I found out they weren't remotely veg.  Also for some of us fast food chains are the closest we have to corner stores, so it's nice to know which ones we can and can't eat at.

Hi all! I know I'm late to the convo but I found out yesterday that Joan's pantry in hawthorndene Adelaide sells hot chips that as far as I can tell are vegan. They use edgells chips which are fried in canola oil, the chicken salt they use is "Mitani" which has apparently been vegan approved (so says the gluten free expo website anyway), they use vegetable oil to fry it in, and the fryers have NEVER been used for anything other than frying up chips and wedges as nothing else on their menu requires deep frying. It's not near the beach or anything but next time you're in the area to play on the playground you'll know there's chips nearby.

It's been my experience just asking around that chips are rarely cooked in beef tallow anymore. Not even McD's does it.
Mine too, same goes for frying in the same batch. Most places cook sooo much stuff they wouldn't bother with that... so many chips are generally sold that they're separate. In my experience I don't think I've ever come across a place that cooks in the same batch and/or uses anything other than vegie oil.
