This is what my dad says to pretty much anything I tell him, and I have nothing to give him back to make him understand what I'm trying to say.
Do any of you get this argument? How do you combat it?

Hey Sarah, noone has actually said this to me, but I'd probably say that nature has nothing on cruelty when it comes to humans, and the way we raise and treat animals is hardly natural!

how is nature cruel? like, does he mean fierce storms and tsunamis and tornados, etc?
or does he mean lions eating deer?
tell him ''if the lions want to go vego i've got no problems with that'' otherwise, wat can you say?
it is nature for animals to eat other animals because those animals arent locked up in a tiny battery cage.
humans have gone against nature and started to think we are above everything, even the forests and trees.
but animals are so in tune with nature, it is fine if they eat other animals.
there, tell him that

Yes, I get this comment quite a lot, and as others have said here, I go with the, "there's nothing natural about factory farming," reply.

Also, it upsets me to see a cat kill a bird or a lion kill a deer, never said I liked everything about the way nature works, but I can make a choice to avoid causing pain, suffering and fear.

There are three main things really.

Firstly, a lion needs to kill other animals in order to survive and it is instinctive I think. Human's don't and I don't think people can say it's really instinctive for us to kill others because if you watch nayone watching an animal in pain you'll say they don't like it too much.
Plus, as I said, it's for survival. Animal products, many studies now show, is actually bad for us.

Secondly, it's about balance. The 'food chain' argument actually runs in our favour. It is a balancing act, it keeps things in check. Human animal use does the oppposite (there are millions of examples... livestock impact on climate change, fishing, etc)

Thirdly, other animals do a lot of things that we don't. I'm assuming your dad is aligning us with carnivores? (We are obviously are not that). But think for example of how may animals fight to the death over a mate. Surely your father doesn't think humans should do that? If we were so concerned with acting like *some* other animals, why does your father drive a car? Use a computer or a phone? etc...

The simple point is, if you think it's wrong to unneccesarily harm humans, you can't defend harming nonhumans.

"nature's cruel" is a silly thing to say, without nature there would be no 'us'. I pretty much agree with everything else being said. We humans have a choice to have alternatives... a lion can't grow soybeans! and yeah... factory farms are DEFINITLEY NOT natural.
 broccoli yey for green stuff!!
