Hey!!
I just wanted to vent a little bit on something that I have noticed.
Background: I have been vegan for 1 year and 6 months.
Lately I have noticed that vegetarians seem to not like me being vegan. Does anyone else get this sometimes? I get the feeling that they see me as "extreme" and "don't make sense"
I had someone (a friend) say to me the other day,
"I eat eggs because no animal had to die to give me eggs and it's a natural thing that a chicken has to do, if I didn't eat eggs, the chickens are still going to lay them anyway"
(by the way, she is talking about store bought eggs)
Now, I need to reply to this comment here, because I couldn't say anything to her face. I would have gotten kind of emotional about it and did not want to start a fight and wanted to respect her opinion. Therefore,...
Ok. Firstly, it's a good point. Yes the chicken WILL indeed still lay eggs. BUT!!! If humans did not eat eggs, there would be NO BARN CHICKENS living in horrible conditions, living in constant pain just to meet the demand of the egg eating public!!
Secondly, I MUST address 'no animal died' this is very very false!! many battery hens die. Yes, they die!! The living condition is so bad, that some chickens get trampled on and die! They are in constant pain, some say that is worse than death, and last of all, the male chickens die because they do not lay eggs, so they do not serve as much of a purpose as the female chickens.
I was very surprised when my friend said this statement, as I thought she would have surely known all this information as she has been a vegetarian for years!
I'm not annoyed that she didn't know these facts, I'm annoyed that she seemed to say it in a way that "being a vegan is silly"
Is there a silent war going on between vegans and vegetarians that I don't know about?
I LOVE vegetarians, they believe the same things I believe (usually) and they love animals and are all for helping animals, which is great!! I have no issues with vegetarians, UNTIL they contradict themselves and view me as "extreme"
