Veganism = Good Grades

So I thought I'd just share a really good feeling I had today. I'm currently studying to be a paramedic and this semester I did my unit on nutrition. Being vegan for four years (yes it's my birthday next week hint hint), has really taught me the importance of nutrition and given me a very in depth understanding of the role food plays in our health.

So while everybody was cramming today and asking questions like "WTF is a lipoprotein?" I was lapping up the moment reflecting on how much I had learned about nutrition before I had even started studying it. And then after the exam when people discussed their different answers and realised what they had got wrong, I was able to say that I blitzed it with minimal study. This is where people were envious of me being vegan (apart from all the hot chicks that hang out with you being a vegan, jokes).

Have other people found that by changing your lifestyle it makes you more aware and knowledgeable about health? I definitely would not have known half of the answers had I still been eating flesh, veins and intestines each day...

Definitely! Especially seeing as when I first turned vegetarian I was freaking out about protein, then I started doing actual research, aha. But I know a heap more now that I'm vegan, which is cool.

And I know how to cook now as well! Which is always an added bonus. tongue

I started learning about vegetarianism. Then I learned about veganism. The I learned about nutrition. Then I learned about organic and non GM foods. Then I learned about raw vegan food and the raw organic lifestyle. I can pretty much tell you anything about what is good and natural for the body and it doesn't involve consuming, wearing, testing on or using animals happy And you know something else I learned? GPs get next to no training in nutrition and they are 'educated' via studies conducted by the meat and dairy industries to tell you that animal products are part of a healthy diet.

When I was vegetarian I didn't, but when I became vegan I did. When you eliminate so many food groups, you need to do your research!

It's funny now when ppl get worried about your iron levels etc when we know there are so many nutrients in all our "veg" food!
