How do you deal with jerks?

Can you believe someone could be so insensitive?

Hi guys.
Just a few days ago a kid found out I was a vegetarian. And we whispered for 30 minutes under the teacher's radar about our views on veganism. He said that vegans are sickos, aren't really making a difference and won't survive, and all that (Profanity inserted here.). He was being very rude and close-minded, and I tried explaining to him how I don't eat animals and why .I couldn't believe this guy. He said that animals don't have feelings and when I showed him one of my famous graphic horror animal farm pictures, he said "So!". HOW CAN YOU LOOK AT A PILE OF BLEEDING ANMALS AND SAY"SO"??? . Apparently, this guy also tortures small spiders by ripping their legs off and feeding them to his venus fly trap. I couldn't believe it!

So, how exactly do you deal with close-minded (Expletive here, profanity here!)  furious jerks?

I know exactly what you mean
I had a man at work actually harass me about it until i took it further, one day it was so bad that when i left that day i cried all the way home.
It was then that i realised “hang on a minute what am i doing? This is who i am and im not shamed of it”
After that i no longer cared about what anyone else thought because i knew who i was.
I know how this sounds but it was true.
So now my favourite come backs are especially if it’s a male I’m dealing with (I’m female)

“do you feel like a big man picking on a women and her beliefs huh?”
And if I still get a smart comment back, i simply interrupt them and say

“look I’m going to stop you there, I’m done with this conversation you are far too closed minded for this topic so I’m done, we have nothing else to discuss ” and walk off not waiting for their response.

I said this to the man the next day at work and felt so good about might self.
9 times out of 10 you can just hear as your walking off they repeat to themselves “closed minded?” lol
These people don’t understand and don’t really care about understanding I found.
Just hold your head high because we are “vegan or vegetarian or pescatarian and we are proud” lol
 megaphone peace

I've dealt with small minded people in the past and usually it's a battle you can't win, or change their minds on things (there might be the exceptions).  It's usually an ego thing for them as well, wanting to be right and I think sometimes perhaps people give vegetarians/vegans and the like a hard time because they possibly may think 'what you think you're such a good person for not eating meat do you?'  Everyone likes to see themselves as a good person and for some strange reason some people are almost offended by it  and just want to argue with you for the hell of it.  Don't let it bother you, it's their insercurities and ignorance.

Dude at least he's older than you, assholes like them are going to eventually die out in the future like homophobes and slave owners.

Hi Kelsey,

I agree with explaining to people your point of view and why you are choosing this path, but when it comes to people who are just having a go at you, it's pointless trying to say anything more. If you treat them respectfully, they may well change their ways when they think about how kind and thoughtful you were when they had a go at you. Noone is going to listen to what you say if you are rude back to them (not implying that you were).

As with anything, people will always have their own beliefs. As vegans and veggos etc, we rely on reason, logic, compassion and emotion to move forward. Some people just don't have these abilities, so we must move forward with those who do!
