I have always been an animal lover, every child should have compassion for all sentient beings, that is a given. How can an innocent youngster honestly have the cognitive ability to decide “hey that lamb in that paddock should be on my plate”? Everything is taught to us, we learn and we need to take the reigns at some point in our life and teach ourselves what is right and what is wrong. It is clear who “taught” us what and how to eat when were little, as this article on cognitive development in babies in children suggests; twelve years old and up is when we start to develop the fourth cognitive stage, known as formal operations. This is the stage that kids can think for themselves and acquire the ability to understand formal logic and produce abstract propositions, numerous hypotheses and their possible outcomes with evidence (http://www.kidspot.com.au/discoverycentre/Joy-of-discovery-Development-Cognitive-development-in-babies-and-children+5357+553+article.htm). I was born in 1992 but it was not until 2011 that I became a vegetarian and then around late July of 2012 I became a vegan. I was pulled down by countless lies, until social media released the unimaginable suffering that is the meat industry. I had no idea that was how my food got to my plate. I was disgusted and it had to change.

This is enough! I have heard too much! It is a constant barrage of criticism and belittlement in my life because I decided to stand alone and fight for the right cause. I did my research, I still do my research; I watch documentaries, I read articles, research papers, books and am touched every day by heart breaking, real stories. Why is it that I am the one that is ridiculed? I am doing everything I can to help animals, the environment and the human race. Yet, what are omnivores doing? Satisfying their appetite, one would say that is a selfish act. But I am in the firing line for their simple satisfactions. People often try to tell me that they have the right to be heard and that it is unfair that I don’t listen to their side of the story, since they apparently listen to mine all the time. I have been listening, all my life because our parents teach us that meat and dairy is right, our teachers, our doctors, our friends, family, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) created a nutritional database that teaches us meat and dairy is an important part to getting our major nutrients. I listened, I listened for a good eighteen years and that was by far enough ears to give. However, I do find it funny that the USDA instils meat and dairy as important to our food plate. It is organisations like them that people will use to tell me “oh you are not getting enough iron and protein and other essential nutrients in your body”. Now this is the really interesting part about that, the USDA only suggest ground beef as good source of iron from red meat. Other meats you that provide iron for you are liver and other organ meats, so if you trust the USDA, maybe you should go eat some brain (http://www.fns.usda.gov/tn/Resources/appendd.pdf).

I am often shot down by people telling me “You are out right wrong”, “You are teaching people an unhealthy diet”, people have even told me “You will die if you continue this lifestyle”. Why do you think people criticise my beliefs? Why do you think they believe what they are saying is true? The USDA is apparently a reliable source and all the facts I find are unreliable. Well the USDA is definitely not reliable since they were successfully sued by the Physicians Committee of Responsible Medicine (PCRM) in 1999/2000. Why you ask? Conflict of interest, board members were being paid off by none other then the meat and dairy industries (http://www.pcrm.org/media/news/court-rules-against-usdas-secrecy-and-failure-to). The PCRM is a not-for-profit organisation and they are currently suing the USDA again due to the fatal flaw they found in their new guidelines that encourages us to eat unhealthy American foods (http://pcrm.org/good-medicine/2011/springsummer/pcrm-sues-usda-over-deceptive-dietary-guidelines). The question is, who can you really trust? We need to start thinking and looking for ourselves. Do not listen to people who are paid off by corporations with one agenda only, MONEY!

Am I going to get osteoporosis? The dairy that I am missing out on, how will my bones cope? Well last I knew, we stopped drinking breast milk when we were babies and I am pretty sure a cow is a cow, therefore cow’s milk is meant for a cow’s baby. Turns out animal protein actually sucks the calcium out of your bones, so you never would have guessed but dairy does the reverse of what you thought it did. Yes, the countries that consume the highest amount of dairy also have the highest cases of osteoporosis (http://www.animalsaustralia.org/features/dairy-calcium-myth.php).
Will I suffer from diabetes? Die of heart disease? Face the torment of cancer? If you think a vegan diet is drastic, then you should try being in Joey Aucoin’s position. Mr Aucoin had type 2 diabetes and was popping nine pills today, plus taking two injections. He was overweight, had high blood pressure, high cholesterol and high blood sugar. This was drastic and after switching to a plant based diet, Mr Aucoin is free of all these sufferings (http://www.blog.farmusa.org/tag/joey-aucoin/). “One quarter of what you eat keeps you alive. The other three-quarters keeps your doctor alive” (Forks over Knives). The spectacular documentary, Fork over Knives, discusses the health benefits of a plant based diet. Doctors such as Dr T Colin Campbell and Dr Caldwell Eccelstyn have ground breaking research debunking what you thought about meat and dairy. Can you believe heart disease and cancer can be reversed? Heart disease is the number one health killer in Australia, why let it continue to result in thousands dying of a disease that can be prevented. Cancer can be prevented too, Dr Ruth Heidrich even reversed her cancer (http://www.forksoverknives.com/about/synopsis/), (http://www.drmcdougall.com/stars/star07_ruth-heidrich.html).

“If we could live happy and healthy lives without harming others... why wouldn't we?” is Edgar’s Mission’s motto in life and why shouldn’t we take this advice? If we stop harming our fellow sentient beings not only would they be safer and happier but we would be healthier and so would the environment. Animals Australia says it all, global warming, water shortages, land destruction and deforestation, waste, dead zones, empty oceans and world hunger. This is all thanks to our lovely ‘friends’, the meat and dairy industries (http://whyveg.com/save_the_planet/). Animals are suffering every year for some silly appetite, 40 billion to be precise, and 40 billion dying horrible, pointless deaths. In Australia alone, over 500 million animals in farming practices suffer what would normally warrant cruelty charges if it was your pet (http://whyveg.com/animals/).

My point is I am at the end of the line with dealing with inconsiderate people who want to joke about throwing a steak on the barbie. I am taking a stand and no matter what any omnivore thinks, there will always be me, there will always be other vegetarians and vegans. The world is changing, the world is suffering, species will be lost to us, species ARE lost to us! I know I am helping stop the damage. What are you doing?

I hate the USDA!!!! I read that they purposely change test results so that meat still sounds good! And they sell that crappy info to my school! I bet Abraham Lincoln would be disappointed to see what the USDA is doing right now.
