So, tomorrow is the dreaded day in which we dissect a cow's eye in science, although I'm not going to dissect one myself.
Do you guys have any stories/advice on dissections at school or how I can explain to my teacher why I wont do it and how I could offer alternatives? Thanks (:
luckily the obly day i had to dissect anything, i was away.
just tell your teacher that your vego and don't want to do it.
my teacher doesn't make me do any non-vegan things
Ask your teacher whether or not they would dissect a black persons eye. That always seems to show them you point of view.
For example, on zoo's, when people ask me why I'm against them and they still don't make the connection after I explain, "would you get enjoyment out of seeing black people locked in cages?" (Which actually did happen).
Because we have only very recently started to give people with more melanin in their skin equal rights, some people can understand that just because someone looks different it doesn't mean we are superior. In the simplest form.
i did it in high school though that was in my pre-veggie days and i didn't think anything of it.
When i was studying animal care we did a section on lab animals which was pretty horrid. They taught us alot of the old skool methods and i couldn't get out of it or i'd fail.
I just kept thinking about the animals i would save due to being a animal attendant.
Ooh this brings back memories that make my blood boil.
In grade 8 we had to watch the teacher dissect an eye and I became really faint even though I wasn't looking, the teacher was fantastic about it and said I could leave the room with one of the other girls. We went to sit outside and another science teacher walked past and asked us what we were doing, we told him and he looked at me and said "What's your problem? You eat McDonalds don't you? Get back inside and stop being a pussy." My friend dragged me inside and luckily, because I would have let him have it.
if they don't listen to your requests that you don't want to do it cos your vegan, i suggest saying 'ooh i feel a little faint' in a wierd voice and then kinda colapse on the floor and let them drag you out of the room.
This is a topic close to my heart. In year 7 science class, we had to dissect pregnant rats. I flatly refused and walked out of the class. That night I went home to my mum and told her I couldn't eat meat anymore. Obviously, it had been mulling over in my head for some time, but that science class was the trigger for my lifestyle today. In fact, my brother and mum went vegetarian with me, and my dad made the shift a bit further down the track.
Thankfully, the teacher of that science class was understanding, but I copped plenty of bullying from other students, come to think of it that hasn't stopped for the past 21 years.
Obviously, that many years ago, vegetarianism was pretty uncommon and veganism had barely been heard of, but I believe there are a number resources available to you now. here's a few links:
