Dietary Dilemma

Ok,

So I have been a vegetarian for 25 years, and I do not eat eggs either.  And I only eat free range dairy products.   I am being told that I am going to have to return to eating animal protien and start taking fish oil or basically I dramaticaly shorten my life span.  which 5 years ago would not have bothered me but I now have a 3 year old daughter.  I have autoimmune thyroid disease, and osteoarthritis.  So when it comes to protien I cannot eat soy, dairy or legumes and as I have had gastric sleeve surgery I cannot consume enough nuts or quinoa to meet my daily protien needs, and I have been told I should also stay off grains.  I am currently taking flaxseed oil for the osteoarthritis but it is not working.   Apparently there are a small number of people that cannot absorb one of the protiens in flaxseed oil and need to take fish oil, apparently I am one of those people.  I am really struggling with the idea of taking fish oil, and the though of eating an animal really just floors me.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi, I guess its really hard to give suggestions without being a medical professional cos I wouldn’t want to give you wrong info! But maybe you could make a list of all the foods that you can and are willing to eat & take it to a nutritionist or your doctor to see if that diet would work for you?

First thing first, that's not true.

First thing first, that's not true. Animal protein is not necessary.
Reading a little more though, I'm sure there are some vegetarian-friendly natural supplements for you.

That really is not a very nice situation to be in. I might suggest getting opinions from a few other people if possible. I have heard some really weird things people have been told by their doctors and dietitians that I know as actual fact are not true.

I can't really comment on the necessity to have animal protein in your particular circumstance as I am not a medical professional and I haven't really looked into cases where it is deemed necessary. Naturally I feel a little bit skeptical that you do need animal protein, but that is feeling based, not knowledge based.

Really though, if you speak to a few different people and do some research and come up with no answer to your problem please don't risk your health by maintaining a diet that may be harming you, especially if you have a little one to look after. If it somehow comes down to a choice between your health or eating animal products, I feel you should choose your health. I'm sure if it comes to it (which I sincerely hope isn't the case) you will choose the highest welfare, most sustainable options you can find and eat no more than necessary.

I really hope someone comes up with a solution with you.

As other have said, I can't give much advice as I don't fully understand your condition and would hate to give you the wrong advice (so take everything I say with a grain of salt happy). In regards to the fish oil, these tablets give you all the same benefits as fish oil tablets. They are made using concentrated amounts of algae, which fish eat to get their nutrients from. So they're basically just cutting out the fish and getting it straight from the source.

Maybe try showing them to your doctor and see what they think?

Also, I would strongly suggest getting a second, third or even fourth opinion on the matter! Different people will give you different advice, and it never hurts to get another opinion from someone else.

If it does come down that you need to eat animal protein, then buying free range will be an obvious choice. Also remember you can always help animals in other ways too happy Like buying products not tested on animals, making donations, donating your time to shelters etc.

First off go to a few other dieticians and doctors and get there opinions.
Secondly, (if you havent already of course) do some research on your diseases yourself.

Is it only temporary? I know little about gastric band surgery, but after a while does the amount you can eat increase? Why don't you eat eggs? (Just wondering) If you can get them from a good source, I think they are the kindest of all animals products.
I would start eating eggs.
If you do need animal products, don't stress. Buying free range will actually help support the idea of no more factory farms. Everyone stops eating meat? Not likely. Showing your support to free range meat will help a little.
I hope your ok.

Perhaps try a vegan dietician such as Amanda Benham. Most drs & dieticians are anti veg.

Thankyou so much for the advice everyone, and thankyou for the helpful links too.    I must admit I have only seen 1 dietician and 1 naturopath, but 2 gps have said the same thing to me.  And of course I have done alot of my own research into my health issues, but with no alternatives thus far.

In response to the egg question, they don't agree with me at all, and I have tried eating just egg white but with the same result I always end up sick.

In response to the gastric sleeve question, my stomach will stretch a little, but I will never be able to consume enough nuts or quinoa to meet my daily protien needs.

I have not given up yet, but the thought of consuming an animal just floors me, If i did not have my little girl the shortened lifespan and physical side effects of the illnesses I would just deal with.
