There's not much difference between him watching her sleep, and me watching my boyfriend sleep.. Because it wasn't actually trespassing, because he's allowed there.. I watch my boyfriend sleep all the time happy
Again, "boyfriend" is the operative word here. Edward broke into Bella's house to watch her sleep when they were essentially still total strangers.

I dont think the book was origionally directed at 11 - 15 yr olds, the context is quite mature, and well written.. And the movies are rated M arnt they? Therefore people have acknowledged that it shouldnt be watched by people under 15..

I stopped reading the books because Bella was a little cow.
That's offensive to cows.

We live in the age of Bratz dolls. Mature content is being targeted at pre-teens and early teens regularly. The novels are classified as "teen" or "young adult" paranormal romances- libraries are putting them in the section dedicated to 11-15 year olds (my mum works in a library, I've seen how it's classified).

Well written? It has almost no discernible plot, two-dimensional characters that undergo no character development, it is riddled with grammatical errors and defies the most fundamental, basic, primary-school rules of story-telling. That's not innovative; that's lazy. Just when you think there's going to be a climax.... Oh, wait, no, anti-climax it is. You cannot have an omniscient first-person narrator, either. She cheats at narration!

Defend the enjoyability of the series all you like- it's a matter of taste. How well it is written, and the psychological soundness of the content however? Those things are undeniable.

I'm not necessarily smarter than you. I'm just well-versed in the topics of literature, gender issues and the impact media in all its forms have on audiences.

Fair enough. I'll concede to the fact that you may very well enjoy the series and feel that they are excellent.

I don't think something necessarily has to be intelligent or "good" to be entertaining. I get caught up in Dr Phil sometimes tongue

But yeah, the controlling boyfriend thing is quite scary. I had a friend go through something that you could say to be similar and all that controlling behaviour actually led to physical abuse. He's breaking into her house to watch her sleep, he essentially kidnaps her at one point and doesn't allow her to see certain male friends. The target audience for Twilight is really impressionable and normally I wouldn't just bag out a "trash" novel like this for the sake of it but I think it has the potential to be quite damaging.

Yeah, this is the part that worries me. >.< Other than that, trash novels have their place, I get that.

Hey, don't you dare call Black Books senseless entertainment! It's intelligent, cutting edge social satire tongue

What could be more intelligent than a show based around a snobby drunkard?
