Yep, we still do. Veal is the fate for many bobby calves, the leftovers of the dairy industry, each year in Australia. Fortunately, veal crates are not used in Australia.

Thanks guys, saddened by this fact, it's one thing to eat meat, how anyone can eat a baby anything is beyond me.  Have shared this fact on fb in the hope to make people aware, even though it may not be such a popular meat for consumers today I think they still need to be informed just in case.

I believe perhaps to encourage and inform people to consider not to eat certain meats to begin with for ethical reasons because of the conditions they have to endure such as pigs, their age, such as lambs and calves could be a start one can only hope.  I know I wasn't entirely sure what veal was way back when until I did my own research.

Does anyone know how many (if any) veal farms are in production in Australia? When I've been to the bobby calf sales and rescued calves the farmers always told me that regardless if the calf is a male or female they either kill them after birth on the farm or send them to auction where the man from the Slaughterhouse buys them, no one has ever mentioned calves been sold to veal farms >.<

Well firstly to answer your question to if veal farms are in production here in Australia... Yes. (I provided some detailed facts in one of my posts above if you care to read it, it states that Australia is one of the top producers of cattle and calves and I also just came across this too “Millions of calves around the world are reared and killed annually to provide veal for local and international markets. Bobby calves are sold to: farmers, slaughter houses, agents that are employed as free lance buyers for clients which are generally slaughter houses.

Farmer sometimes buy them to be reared for veal (referred to as single meat buyers) and about one quarter of the heifers will become replacements for adult milk-producing cows and are sold back to a dairy farmer once full grown... some are also sold to overseas dairy farmers.

Products processed from bobby calves are not just veal, but also hides for leather and by products for the pharmaceutical industry.

Next to all bull calves (males) and around and around three quarters of their heifer calves (females) are slaughtered... they kill all doesn’t matter what the sex is but they have to be at least 5 days old before sold or killed, (I figure you already know that the only reason why farmers bread cows is for the females to continue producing milk, because if they don’t have babies they stop producing after a period of time... and also to repopulate there herd of cows for continuous meat production too.)

Don’t take this wrong but how did you think the abattoirs got the calves to process veal if not by purchasing them at auctions? Or did you think that the end product (veal) was shipped here from overseas?

Bobby Calves are also slaughtered for Blood and Bone Fertilizer and Pet Food.

I wanted to know how many Veal farms where in operation/production in Australia, i know that there would be farms but i was interested in finding the Number of farms in production but thankyou for the links.

Growing up in a Beef, Dairy and Sheep farming family and area i can tell you that the vast Majority of the dairy farmers have contracts with the local Meatworks (Slaughterhouse) and send the Bobby Calves directly to the slaughterhouse to be killed and processed. The smaller farmers send the calves to auction and then the calves are either bought by the contacted Meatworker or the male calves are bought by individual farmers and are grown out and slaughtered as either Weaners, Yearlings or Bullocks.

Just because you come from that back ground doesn't mean every one you meet anywhere automatically knows that... though i figure by the way you have wrote your reply you meant it as"well i would know more then you" bal bla...

Individual farmers don't just buy the males - they purchase more female then anything as they rear them for dairy farmers, not to mention their own supply of veal, some are sold to over seas for their dairy farms

Also like i stated above - i meant no rudeness buy what i had said... the reason i asked was to find out if what you had thought, because according to your first post it seemed quite clear that you had no or little information on the topic due to 'if any' and 'no one ever told you about bobby's calf sales to veal farmers' how do you think they are even 'veal farmers if they cant buy any so it is obvious they do purchase them...but hey i was just trying to be helpful and once again you practically spit in my face...

I never said you where being sarcastic? I said thank you for the beef and veal statistics you shared as it was informative. What I meant by 'if any' was if there was any large scale farms like in American that had thousands of calves chained up In little shelters that are commercial farms as I have never herd of any in Australia before, I've only herd of small scale farmers purchasing male calfs to grow out for beef production not veal production in either grass paddocks or in Feedlots.


I never said that everyone I meet is right, I was just mentioning it as I have spoken to a lot of dairy farmers over the years and no one ever mentioned sending calves to veal farms and some even said they have never herd of veal farms, so that why if was curious to see if there was any large scale veal farms in Australia.
