I went to a Seventh Day Adventist school - all vegetarian food! happy From memory we had a variety of vegetarian pies/pasties, jacket potatoes, vegetarian nachos, toasted sandwiches and salad rolls.

As for convincing them to use free range meat, good on you! I would say write a letter. Make sure you know your facts, include logical arguments and statistics and get your parents to proof read it! Note that your classmates/peers support the move, and perhaps offer to collect signatures to prove this?

Best of luck!!

Sounds like a good idea! You can really do a lot when your in school. Fruit salad, muesli, veggie pasties and pies could work.

When proposing alternative meal options to your principle, it a good idea to estimate the avg cost for making each item (we all know schools are cheap in this area... well most anyways) if you show them just how inexpensive it can be then chances are you will get what you want... vegan options happy  Below is a list of very cheap, easy to make and very popular even among omni's:

- corn jacks
- hot dogs
- vegan spring rolls
- sausage rolls
- tempeh Skewers
- pizza slices / pizza pockets
- salad (fruit, garden and even pasta salads)
- vegan lasagne (or even eggplant lasagne yum)
- eggless quiche
- veggie pies/ pasties
- toasted and fresh sandwiches
- vegetable soups
- potato jacks
- baked quoina bites
- ravioli
- sushi
- burger patties
- taquitos
- vegan pastas and pasta bakes
- vegan risotto
- veggie filled oven bake or grilled bell peppers
- vegan pancakes / pikelets
- vegan chips  / wedges / Gems (cooked in olive oil / peanut oil is best)
- awesome gravy recipe – is just caramelized finely chopped onions (sometime I like to add mushrooms too)  + freedom food vegi spread and a couple pinches of flour (basic but sooo yum)

- dont forget vegan chocolates / cakes / cookies /  ice cream and smoothies happy

there is some really cool finger foods at http://www.pinterest.com/linzisworld/vegan-finger-foods/ and there are sooo many other website to have a look at to get inspiration for your proposal.

I just wanted to ad that I think another good thing to do is taking it higher then just the school you attend is important... contacting councils to proposition them to make it compulsory to have vegan options would also be a great and moving thing to do happy

In fact, when I have a little more time on my hands I might even email all city councils in Australia  (if possible) to proposition the idea... I'll keep everyone posted happy might even need signatures to make them listen...

Also keep us all posted about how you go with your school... and have you finished that fundraising event yet - how did that go? happy

I don't mean any offense by this! happy

Not sure how old you are, but I'm 16 and attend a public high school. There is absolutely no way anyone in my whole school would buy tempeh skewers, eggplant lasagna, baked quinoa bites etc.

If your school does agree to sell some vegan options such as these, they will realise that it doesn't sell, and might get a negative opinion of all vegetarian food. sad

Maybe a good idea would be to do some little surveys? just business card size, pass them out in the canteen line or whatever. It could say "what would you be most likely to buy" with little tick boxes for jacket potato, nachos, salad roll etc. You could pass the results on to your canteen coordinator or principal.

If you have any success with this let me know how you did it! I'd love to try make a difference in my school too! xxx

Keep in mind when suggesting foods of common allergies, for example I know that most schools would not allow any products with peanuts etc.

Just by covering all areas and showing you've considered these things will help happy

Great point to make, I had never considered that side of it before; I do not attend school anymore and I was actually just trying to think of cost effective, easy to make and popular among vegans/ vegetarians; thus the amount of ideas... as well as had tigerilly specified public/private that could have made some difference in my suggestions.

Personally I don't see how if a particular product doesn't fly off the shelves/counter they would can the whole idea... if that were true then what animal meals don't they like so then we may put them in there; subsequently making them can the whole idea of eating meat - I don't get it, that just wouldn't happen they would just try something else realising that not everyone likes a particular type of food/meal... but I do understand your incentive to make it as easy a proposal/transition as possible, so yes great advise happy
