Tell Florida- Kittens are not "Alligator Bait"

target: Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Executive Director Nick Wiley

The unthinkable happened in West Palm Beach, Florida- kittens were rescued off a boat, tied up and intended to be used as "bait". Accoring to the rescuer at Adopt A Cat Foundation, it's not that uncommon- kittens are used as fish bait, shark bait, and alligator bait.

Putting a cat in water is cruelty enough; but to put a cat tied up, or with fish hooks inserted- to be eaten alive by a shark or an alligator, is depraved, savage brutality.

We ask the Florida Fish and Wildlife Law Enforcement to make arrests and file charges of animal cruelty against these fishermen.

Stop Coyote-Killing Contests, Protect Wolves In Washington
author: Center for Biological Diversity
target: US Fish and WIldlife Service

Right now, in northeast Washington, a killing contest is underway.

Washington's barbaric yearly contest hunts across the state put coyotes -- and all animals that might be mistaken for coyotes -- at risk. This particular contest hunt is putting endangered wolves in the crosshairs because the killing is happening in an area at least seven of the state's wolf packs call home.

Coyotes are needlessly gunned down in these derbies. Killing coyotes -- or any wild animal -- as part of a contest or tournament is ethically indefensible, ecologically reckless and runs counter to the best available science on the stewardship of Washington's wildlife.

Scientists who study coyotes have found that indiscriminate killing of coyotes actually results in more problems.

If you are able, you can join the Center for Biological Diversity's West Coast Wolf Organizer Amaroq Weiss at the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission hearing in Moses Lake on Saturday morning, March 8 to speak up for wolves and coyotes.

so far we've got 24,142 signatures, help us get to 25,000 by April 1, 2014

You can also act now to send a letter to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission. Urge them to stop the state's coyote-killing contests.

Animals Suffering and Dying at Surabaya 'Death Zoo'

Indonesia's Surabaya Zoo has recently come under fire yet again for confining animals to severely crowded, filthy, inadequate enclosures and for the long list of animals who have died or gone missing at the decrepit facility. Most recently, a young lion died after becoming entangled in wires in his cage.
Last year, Rozek, a 13-year-old Sumatran tiger—a critically endangered species—died after suffering for years from an undiagnosed digestive problem, while another tiger at the zoo with the same ailment suffered without being treated. An endangered Bornean orangutan named Betty also met a premature death at the hands of the zoo. Adding to the list of horrors, in 2012, a giraffe died after ingesting almost 20 kilograms of plastic.
Please write to Indonesian officials and demand that they end the suffering of animals at the Surabaya Zoo and other zoos for good. Please use this link to ask them to close the zoo and transfer the animals to sanctuaries or more suitable facilities.

Demand an End to the slaughter of Calderon Dolphins in the Faroe Islands

Every year, in Denmark, specifically the Faroe Islands, innocent and helpless Calderon Dolphins are slaughtered brutally by the danes.  Simply because of a pointless and stupid right of passage to manhood.
What point is there in killing another living being just to prove you have "evolved", you have transcended. There is simply no need.

These poor dolphins are stabbed a number of times, but as if that wasn't enough, they bleed to death, probably in excruciating pain while the whole town watches.
Needless to say, that killing a defenseless animal is no proof of anybody's manhood.
So, I urge, as I am sure many more have, to stop this ridiculous tradition and take action.
Never, ever, killing an other creature, another living being, with whom we share this world, has done any good, to anyone. One person cannot change the world but many people together can make a huge difference!

Hidden camera captures 'blatant animal cruelty' at turkey farm

An animal rights group member brought a hidden camera into a turkey farm to capture the treatment of the animals on video. (AP / David Duprey)

http://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/hidden-camera-captures-blatant-animal-cruelty-at-turkey-farm-1.1729233#ixzz2vx7tXGNd

TORONTO -- Disturbing video showing employees of one of the world's leading turkey producers clubbing, kicking and otherwise abusing the hapless birds is evidence of a culture of cruelty and neglect at the factory farm, an animal-rights group said Friday.

The company in question, Hybrid Turkeys, said it had suspended four employees and called the abuse depicted in the video an isolated incident.

The video was shot at a Hybrid plant in Bright, Ont., by a member of the animal rights group, Mercy for Animals Canada.

Footage also shows workers apparently crushing the spines of birds while others are left to die from festering and bloody wounds.

"This investigation graphically illustrates that the hidden price of Canadian turkey meat is horrific animal abuse," said Twyla Francois, a spokeswoman for Mercy For Animals.

"This is blatant animal cruelty that shouldn't be supported in a civilized society."

In anticipation of the video's release, Hybrid said last week that it had taken immediate steps to ensure the ethical treatment of its turkeys.

"Hybrid has zero tolerance for animal abuse," managing director David Libertini said in a statement.

Hybrid said it would co-operate with any investigations into the abuse and had already initiated a third-party review of company policies and procedures.

Urgent: Act Now to Protect Canada's Wild Fish

target: Peter Ferguson, Manager, Legislation and Regulatory Affairs, Fisheries and Oceans Canada; Prime Minister Harper; Fisheries and Oceans Minister Gail Shea

Since 2012, the Canadian government has systematically gutted its laws protecting fish. First, it amended the federal Fisheries Act, dramatically weakening protection of fish and fish habitat.

Then, it lifted the moratorium on fish farms in BC, opening the door to a massive expansion of aquaculture.

Now, it wants to pass regulations that would allow the Environment and Fisheries Ministers to permit fish farms and industry to pollute our waters, harming fish with impunity.

These regulations would let the Ministers:
•Give blanket authorization to fish farms to dump drugs, pesticides and other pollutants into wild fish habitat;
•Allow other industries to dump pesticides in fisheries waters; and
• Shirk their regulatory oversight of pollutants, offloading responsibility onto provincial governments or relying on.

Cabinet is considering public comments before it passes these regulations, but there's not much time. Act now! Tell the Canadian government to protect our wild fish and not pass these risky regulations.

Tell America's Biggest Brands to Use Deforestation-Free Palm Oil
author: Union of Concerned Scientists

Palm oil, an ingredient in thousands of everyday products from snack foods to shampoo, is ubiquitous in our grocery stores and homes. Unfortunately, the big brands behind our favorite products often use palm oil responsible for tropical deforestation.

As tropical forests are cleared or carbon-rich peat swamps are drained and burned to make way for palm oil plantations, carbon is released into the atmosphere, driving global warming and shrinking habitat for endangered species. Tropical deforestation currently accounts for about 10 percent of the world's heat-trapping emissions.

Many of America's top brands—including Procter & Gamble, Colgate-Palmolive, PepsiCo, General Mills, McDonald's, and Dunkin' Brands—continue to use palm oil that could be wreaking havoc on our environment. They are the leaders in their industries—setting the standard for other food, personal hygiene, and consumer goods corporations. They must set the bar high and make a firm commitment to use only deforestation- and peat-free palm oil.

Tell these major corporations that—for the sake of our atmosphere, tropical forests, peatlands, and endangered species—the time to act is now.

Ban the Hong Kong Ivory Trade:
Why this is important

Here's a message from the petition organisers, Lucy Lan Skrine (柯嵐), aged 11, and Christina Seigrist (孫藍慧), aged 8, who both live and go to school in Hong Kong.

“Tens of thousands of elephants are slaughtered every year for their ivory and Hong Kong can do something important to help stop this evil trade. We were horrified to discover that there have been seven seizures of smuggled ivory this year alone, and that the Hong Kong government has a stockpile of 12 tonnes of ivory collected in the past three years alone. The total stockpile could be as big as 33 tonnes.

Can you imagine how many elephants died for that huge pile of tusks cluttering up our customs warehouses? Destroying confiscated ivory means it can never be traded again and sends a powerful message to poachers. The Philippines crushed and burnt five tonnes of tusks in June 2013. The United States then crushed six tons in November 2013. And in January 2014 China destroyed another six tons. A global trend has emerged. It is now time the Hong Kong government do the same with its stockpile.

We must do something. It’s our responsibility. Elephants are being driven to the brink of extinction by the ivory trade. If we don’t act, they could be extinct within our lifetimes!

Destroying the stockpiles is only a start. We also want the Hong Kong Government to enact a permanent ban on ivory sales in Hong Kong. Then the Chinese government should ban its domestic ivory trade too. They should shut down the 145 shops selling ivory products, which are owned by 70 private companies. And of course China should close down all of its 37 state-owned ivory carving factories across the country.

But as a first step, we want you to sign our petition asking the Hong Kong government to crush and burn the stockpile of ivory. We want Hong Kong to send a message to the world that ivory isn’t welcome here and we won’t allow our city to be any part of this cruel trade. Think about the elephants that died to create that 33 tonne pile of tusks. We must do all we can to make sure they didn’t die for nothing!”

Justice For Pet Dog, Brutally Killed By Police, Langzhong, China!!

On 4th March 2014, police in Langzhong City, Sichuan, China, brutally killed a pet dog belonging to a homeless man. The killing was done during the day near a primary school for no reason at all and is totally unacceptable. The dog was still chained when the police forcefully removed it from it's owner who could do nothing but watch while his companion was beaten to death with sticks and shovels in front of him.

The police later issued a statement defending their actions, saying that the dog's presence might have posed a threat to human safety but this just shows the ignorance and cruelty involved in their actions and shows the world how unfeeling they are. The people in charge in the relevant departments of the government now need to show the world that they condemn this killing, along with Chinese citizens and people around the world, by implementing the Small Animal Protection Law.

Groups on Weibo are condemning the killing and petitions have been started.

Help Chinese activists and animal lovers get protection for their animals.
