TELL THE EPA WE DON'T NEED BP

BY: Center for Biological Diversity
TARGET: Barack Obama and Richard A. Pelletier,
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
About this Petition
Few people need reminding -- but in 2010 the British megacorporation BP caused the worst oil spill our nation has ever seen. BP's Deepwater Horizon rig spilled more than 200 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, harming an unforgivable number of birds, sea turtles and helpless marine mammals -- as well as communities along the coast.

Now BP's back to business as usual, and apparently the Obama administration needs reminding. BP's Whiting refinery in northwest Indiana spilled as much as 1,638 gallons of crude oil on March 24 into Lake Michigan, endangering the area's wildlife and threatening the drinking water supply of 7 million people.

It doesn't have to be this way. The EPA has a responsibility to protect the public by ensuring that our government only does business with responsible companies. Let's face it: BP isn't one of them. The multinational's operations -- from exploration to refining to fuel transport -- have, at some point or another, resulted in violations of our laws.

Take action and urge the EPA to debar or suspend BP so that we, and our vulnerable wildlife, are safe from further harm.

TELL THE BC GOVERNMENT: HANDS OFF OUR FOOD SECURITY!

BY: West Coast Environmental Law
TARGET: Premier Christy Clark; Minister of Agriculture Pat Pimm;
Minister of Core Review Bill Bennett
About this Petition
The BC government has proposed changes to the Agricultural Land Commission Act that put our food security seriously at risk.

If passed, these changes would restrict the role of the independent chair of the Agricultural Land Commission, one of BC's biggest agricultural champions. They would also divide provincial agricultural lands into two zones, significantly weakening agricultural land protection in one of those zones.

The problem? That "zone" contains 90% of the province's agricultural land reserve lands, and 85% of its lands capable of growing a range of crops.

British Columbians are facing increasing threats to our food security due to flooding, droughts and other climate change-related disasters. Reducing protection of lands that are crucial to our ability to be food self-reliant for the short-term gain of urban development or industries could come at a great cost to BC's ability to meet our future food needs.

Tell the BC government BC's farm lands need more, not less, legal protection. Urge the decision-makers to not bring into effect these dangerous changes to our laws protecting agricultural lands!

CANADA, BAN HONEY BEE KILLING PESTICIDES NOW!

BY: Sophie Care
TARGET: Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Industry
About this Petition
37 million bees have died at just one Ontario honey farm this year.

The staggering number of dead honey bees in North America has garnered a lot of attention, and many beekeepers feel that pesticides and pesticide-laced seeds are to blame.

According to the Toronto Star, the pesticide in question (neonicotinoids) has been used on virtually all corn seeds in the Province of Ontario since 2004. That's nearly 10 years of bee poisoning.

The EU has implemented a mandatory two-year ban on the pesticide. But North America is still far behind, continuing to use the pesticide while conducting drawn out investigations.

Health Canada has the authority to mandate a ban like the EU. Demand that Health Canada take action and ban toxic pesticides. The honeybee population in Canada and abroad depend on it.

MAKE COCKFIGHTING A FELONY IN MISSISSIPPI

BY: Animal Advocates
TARGET: Mississippi Senator Deorah Dawkins
About this Petition
Mississippi is one of 10 states where the brutal bloodsport of cockfighting in a misdemeanor, and the penalty is a $100 mazimum fine. Cockfighting is outlawed in all 50 states, with 40 prosecuting the sport as a felony.

Because the law is so weak and the fine so low, cockfighting remains big business in Mississippi, attracting people from all over the country- even though it is illegal to cross state lines to attend an animal fight.

While cockfighting is illegal in the state since the 1800's, it hasnt been adjusted. Perhaps in the 1800's a $100 fine was alot, but in 2013 it is a low price many are willing to pay to participate in the illegal bloodsport.

Tell Mississippi you support the effort to pass a bill to make cockfighting a felony that carries a much larger fine.

SAVE OUR SOUTHERN HAIRY-NOSED WOMBATS

BY: Tammy Franks MLC
TARGET: Environment Minister Ian Hunter MLC & Shadow Minister Michelle Lensink MLC
About this Petition
Across SA’s Murraylands over the last four years, Southern Hairy-nosed Wombats have been dying in their thousands.

Their population is being seriously degraded with illegal culling and burrow destruction having major impacts on the population.

We still don’t know all the answers, but we do know the Government have increased the number of destruction permits by 500% over the last five years and toxic onion weed has taken over the wombats’ habitat as native grasses have disappeared. The recent fires could be the final straw…

There is a better way though- we don’t want our Southern’s going the way of their Northern cousins.

It’s time to take action to Save our Southerns and to ensure we protect and preserve these wonderful and iconic animals now!

STOP THE 2014 NEW JERSEY BEAR HUNT

BY: Mark & Kim
TARGET: NJ Governor Chris Christie, NJ Senators, Representatives
Update #2 April 5, 2014
Hi Everyone, We reached 1,000 signatures today on our petition, Stop the 2014 NJ Bear Hunt. Thank you all so much for your support. Please continue to discuss/email/text about animal abuse issues including the New Jersey Bear Hunt which is a cruel and inhumane trophy hunt for money. Animal abuse is a HUGE issue and needs to be covered & talked about much more. For the animals!!!! Mark & Kim

Update #1 March 14, 2014
Thank you all for signing our petition to stop the 2014 New Jersey Bear Hunt. We have reached 500 signatures already, but have a long way to go. Please try to share with everyone and urge them to sign! Thanks again! Mark & Kim

About this Petition
Please help stop the 2014 NJ Bear Hunt.

Please sign this petition and also call Governor Christie's office at 609-292-6000 to express your outrage over the bear hunt. Ask him to STOP pandering to the violent minority calling for a bear hunt; they represent less than 0.07% of New Jersey’s population.

Senator Raymond Lesniak’s (D-20) BEAR SMART legislation (S687) corrects the state’s failure to organize, implement, and enforce non-lethal solutions preferred by 74% of New Jersey registered voters. Senator Lesniak’s legislation incorporates the best science as recommended by leading biologists.

Peer-reviewed studies show that hunts do not reduce human-bear complaints.
The nation’s leading experts state emphatically that the only way to reduce conflicts is to secure human-derived foods and trash.
Former Governor Corzine’s staff reviewed the science and came down squarely on the side of non-lethal, trash containment. Thus, there were no bear hunts from 2006-2009.
Under Governor Christie, DEP Commissioner Bob Martin simply does the bidding of the state hunting agency, the Division of Fish and Wildlife, and the political action committee that backed Christie during the election.
Bear hunting does not reduce complaints unless of course every bear in the state is killed. Regulated hunting from 1958–1970 almost did that.
At the March 7, 2003, meeting of the Fish and Game Council: The Council all agreed that the killing of a child by a bear in NY was extremely rare. Councilman George Howard said, "All the hunts in the world will not address that…"
Garbage containment is extremely important not only for keeping bears away from homes, but it also reduces their population growth rate. Bears without access to unnatural food sources will not gain as much weight. Weight is a major factor in their reproductive cycle.
A bear’s diet typically consists of berries, fruit, and seeds. They are primarily vegetarian.
Bears are timid animals who often act like prey. Scaring bears, even bears who are used to seeing people can be easily scared off with hoses, umbrellas, broom sticks, and loud noises.
Education reduces unwarranted fears and allows the public to enjoy these beautiful animals and their place in our state. Modifying your behavior will modify the bear’s behavior. When you know what to do, how to properly act and react, the bear will learn from you.

Case studies proved that when food was unavailable, bears were capable of living in close proximity to humans without conflict. (Wildlife Conservation Society, 2008) The vast majority of bear incidents in New Jersey involve unsecured trash bins and dumpsters as well as bird feeders. New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife’s enforcement of an existing, loophole-ridden state feeding ban is poor to non-existent. It’s time New Jersey passes, and enforces, a meaningful ban.

Hunting, killing and destroying our bears is not the answer, co-existing and learning about living together in peace is the answer.

PROTECT ORCAS FROM DEADLY NAVY SONAR

BY: Center for Biological Diversity
TARGET: Kimberly Kler, EIS Project Manager U.S. Navy
About this Petition
The Navy's practice exercises and sonar are wreaking havoc on highly intelligent and social endangered orcas, dolphins and other marine mammals that depend on sound to communicate, find food and raise their young.

Sonar risks putting a stop to all that life-sustaining activity: It's nearly as loud as an explosive, and it can cause hearing loss and even death.

The harms of Navy sonar use are well documented, implicated in the mass strandings of marine mammals from Southern California to the Bahamas and as far as the Canary Islands off the coast of Morocco.

In 2004 Naval sonar use stranded as many as 200 melon-headed whales in Hanalei Bay, near Hawaii. Now the Pacific Northwest is about to get more Navy war games off its coast if we don't act fast.

There are only about 80 orcas left off the coast of Washington, Oregon and California -- so protection for each of them is vital.

Please take action and urge the Navy to train in a way that doesn't tear the fragile fabric of our oceans' web of life.

HELP SAVE THE ELEPHANTS OF TANZANIA FROM THE GUNS OF POACHERS

BY: Georgina B
TARGET: CITES
About this Petition
The situation for the elephants of Africa is dire. One elephant is killed for its tusks every fifteen minutes. The demand for ivory needs to be halted at the global level in order to save this iconic species from slipping into extinction.

However, Tanzania has formally applied to CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna) to sell-off its stockpile of ivory. Selling ivory will only contribute to maintaining the trade by feeding demand, which means the deaths of more elephants at the hands of poachers.

CITES gave permission to four African countries to sell-off ivory stockpiles in 2008, which is seen to have been the catalyst for the current poaching crisis. This ‘one-off’ sale stimulated the market and encouraged more poaching by fueling the belief that a full-scale ivory trade would resume.

Recent figures show that 22,000 elephants were killed across Africa in 2012. The rate of killing compared to natural population growth means the largest animal on Earth could soon become extinct.

According to the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute, Tanzania loses 30 elephants a day to poachers, with total numbers now less than a third of what they were in the 1960s.

Please sign the petition and demand that CITES helps to save the elephants of Tanzania by denying the Tanzanian government’s application to sell-off its stockpile of ivory.

DOGS & CATS BEING NAILED ALIVE ONTO WOODEN CROSSES AND LEFT TO DIE: PROSECUTE THE PERPETRATORS!

BY: Anonymous
TARGET: Dr. George Abela, President of Malta; United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon; and, SPCA of Malta, Barbara Cassar Torreggiani, President
About this Petition
A dog and cat were literally crucified in Malta, on the heels of repeated attacks of the same kind.

There are many recent news references to this atrocity, which happens with frequency -- specifically on the 16th of the month.

There is suspected religious bigotry associated with this act, but that is not the purpose of this petition. This petition condemns and seeks to bring to justice those who perform such unspeakable acts of cruelty, irrespective of their purpose.

Sign out of pain and righteous indignation for the innocent victims. Call for extreme punishment if you are so moved. But, whatever you do, please don't support hating the perpetrators merely because of their (as yet still unestablished) alleged religious affiliations.
